Coping with the Heat at Work

25 June, 2026

With UK temperatures soaring this week, many organisations are issuing advice for how to cope with the heat.

People living with health conditions can be especially vulnerable to higher temperatures, the Government includes the following groups in a list of those at high risk:

  • People with underlying health conditions particularly heart problems, breathing problems, dementia, diabetes, kidney disease, Parkinson’s disease, or mobility problems
  • People on certain medications
  • People who experience alcohol or drug dependence
  • People who work in jobs that require manual labour or extensive time outside
  • People experiencing homelessness, including rough sleepers and those who are unable to make adaptations to their living accommodation such as sofa surfers or living in hostels.

Every workplace is different, and different working environments will always produce their own unique challenges in the heat. Here are some general rules for staying safer at work:

  • Wear cooler clothing (loose-fitting, light coloured)
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day
  • Take breaks in a cool space
  • Ask for a break if you need it
  • Let your manager know if you are too hot, feeling drowsy or have a headache

We also encourage everyone to pay attention to any notices and advice issued by your employer on adaptions being made due to the heatwave.
